Borderlands 3 Will Allow Cross-Platform Play On PlayStation In “Spring”

PlayStation joins the party in the coming weeks. Or maybe months.

Borderlands 3 is finally getting full crossplay. The game received an update last June where most platforms could play with one another but for one notable exception. PlayStation’s networks were excluded from the crossplay update at the request of the publisher, according to a tweet from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, which failed to provide an explanation as to why PlayStation didn’t want to let Xbox and PC Vault Hunters join the fun with their PlayStation colleagues.

Documents revealed during the Apple vs Epic trial from last year indicated that 2K might have been reluctant to add PlayStation to its crossplay update because of the revenue sharing Sony demands from publishers in order to enable crossplay. After all, Sony owns the biggest home console system on the market and crossplay only seems to help its competitors. So, for a game to have crossplay, Sony demanded a bigger slice of the pie, and 2K wasn’t willing to pay.

That situation lasted for most of a year but now seems to have changed. Gearbox confirmed Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands would launch with full crossplay last month, and now we’ve received confirmation that full crossplay will finally hit Borderlands 3 “later this spring.” This includes Xbox, PlayStation, Stadia, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.

Considering spring is already well sprung, Gearbox’s definition of “later in spring” likely means next month at the very least, or possibly right up to the start of summer in late June. That’d be a full year since crossplay hit every other platform for Borderlands except for PlayStation, and possibly indicating the lengths 2K went to negotiate a better rate from Sony. In any case, better late than never.

Borderlands is crossing over to greater than just the PlayStation community. Gearbox lately announced a partnership with Scotch whiskey maker Ballantine’s to carry a Borderlands-classified Scotch to retail proposing none other than Max Moxxi herself.
